452 Too many recipients - Outlook 2003

Posted on Mon 01/02/06 in Technical Interleude

I recently attempted to send a mass email using Microsoft Outlook 2003 to nearly 100 contacts in my address book.

For almost half of the recipients, I received an email saying that the email was undeliverable or deferred due to the following error:

452 Too many recipients

I understood the message. I guessed that the receiving servers interpreted my email as Spam or a DoS or something else unwanted. After searching through pop-up-ridden shareware websites and crafty, luring, search engine depots, I found this:

eAnnouncer – Email Announcement Outlook Add-In

What a fabulous tool?!? It comes in a full-featured freeware version (limited to 50 recipients), a $49 version (limited to 1500 recipients), and a a $99 version (yep, you guessed it: unlimited recipients).

And based on the license agreement at time of install, there was no indication that any scumware was installed.

And with that… I’ll leave you with the following minor hiccup resolution I had while trying to put my outlook email addresses into a mailing list file.

Tips for using Outlook 2003 address book to build Mailing List:

  1. Build a Distribution List using Outlook’s Address Book
  2. Use Save As… to create a .TXT file
  3. Create the email to be sent
  4. Hit the ANNOUNCE button, which will appear the Outlook toolbar once eAnnouncer is installed
  5. BROWSE to find the .TXT file you just created
  6. Once the file is listed in the Mailing List: box, click Open…
  7. Delete all of the lines before the first line containing a name and email address. Insert the following line as the first line in the file (the two words are separated by a TAB): Name Email
  8. Save the text file
  9. Hit SEND

I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a piece of software since Catcall
