An Honest Reminder

I stopped in to the local bagel shop in Cooper City this morning to pickup bagels and nova for the office and a customer who is coming to town from Bolivia. I walked in ten minutes after 6am, which was twenty minutes before they were scheduled to open; they were happy to serve me anyway. I listed the food I needed and asked for a cup of coffee to complete my order.

What happened next was both shocking and relieving. The guy behind the counter entered the amounts for my purchase and hit TOTAL. The total popped up and the cash drawer slid open. Then, he walked around the corner to get me a cup of coffee. With only two other people in the entire resturant, I couldn’t believe someone would leave the cash drawer opened, unsupervised. He did it without concern or fear. It made me feel good. It reminded me that others believe there are honest people in the world. Maybe that belief exists only at this bagel shop.

Whatever the case, when I left the store at a quarter past six, I felt good.

Something to add?

What strikes me about this story is the owners lack of FEAR. The American media, the stenographers of our government, make their billions partly from keeping us afraid… of ourselves, of each other.
What a great example of one who was not giving in to the fear-of-neighbor message we’re being carpet bombed with by our own media-gov’t complex.
