Dear McKenzie, 5 months

Posted on Mon 08/18/08 in Fatherhood

Oh McKenzie... you are already 5 months old this week and moving closer and closer to being out of the infant stage. As people say, kids do not stay babies for long. Since you started smiling probably 3 months ago, you've never seemed to stop. Simply put, you are a happy, easy baby.

Having been the first born amongst my siblings, I have not, until now, seen the backseat that the second child rides in. While Ethan, Mom and I are swimming, you're in the shade, still sweating and lounging in your swing. Occasionally you're invited into the pool, but your fair skin only tolerates a few minutes worth. Then, it's back to the swing. We are a busy family -- rarely sitting around. With Stroller Strides, taking Ethan to camp, Dr. appointments, grocery shopping, visits to dad at work, and Sunday vacations at Grandma's house, it's no wonder you like to sit back and watch the world go by sometimes.

Lately, you're most happy when you're with your terribly sweet two-year-old brother. No, really... he is obscenely, disgustingly good to you. He reminds us to pick you up, says things like, "Hi Sister! You so cute. You beautiful, sister," and "Kenzie, you want to be the front loader?" I haven't heard Ethan tell us to put you away in a long while. Watching the two of you play trucks on the family room rug is a beautiful sight. Although... let's not kid ourselves. Ethan has tried to help you work on your pancake impression... by trying to flip you over with the spatula. He also likes to spank your booty when he thinks you deserve it. When Ethan's around, you paying close attention or you're smiling.

You still love formula, although mom and I have been trying the sweet potatoes and cereal lately. You aren't quite there yet. But, you love to eat your hands, and now your feet! Tasty!

With your newly pierced ears and that precious smile, you are a treat to look at. If you can tell anything about a baby's personality, I'd say you'll grow up being loved by everyone. You're along for the ride and trying not to miss a single minute of it.
