Garden State (2004)

Beth and I borrowed this movie from my sister, who raved about it. Normally, if I put on a movie after 8:30pm on a weeknight, I’m sleeping before the DVD loads. However, I was able to enjoy all 109 minutes of this flick last night.

The story is about a ~30-year-old who returns to New Jersey and his family after not communicating with them for 9 years. The story flowed smoothly and encompassed many emotions. Each moment left me feeling either curious, uncomfortable, bewildered, relieved, or just plain happy. Whichever it was, it was constant.

There was drug use (legal and illegal), Spin the Bottle , chicks in bras and panties. The main character sorta reminded me of Blake Lassman, a friend’s brother. He mostly just looks like him and is quiet.

Rent this flick with a gal-pal and you’ll both be satisfied; there IS a love story mashed into this wacked out story. My dad thought the movie was a waste of time. He didn’t say that, but I inferred that from his comments. He probably didn’t like Donnie Darko either.

Rating (out of 5): 3.5
