MSN Instant Messenger - Verify your email address (email deleted)

Posted on Tue 10/11/05 in Technical Interleude

Every so often, I setup somebody with MSN Messenger. But, I occassionally forget to remind them to respond to the email verification email they will receive after signup. So, about half of the people end up deleteing the email since they don’t know who it was from (like the good little skeptics I’ve advised them to be).

I have yet to find the answer to how I can have another verification email sent. I emailed Microsoft today to see if they have an answer for me. The problem, you see, is that you cannot change your display name without having verified your email address; so, your display name is left as your email address. And even Microsoft advises against using your email address as your display name because it poses a security threat to your account. In addition, your display name has “email address not confirmed” annexed to the end. Irritating.

So I ask, what is the answer?

UPDATE 10/12/05

I received the following email this morning from Microsoft Tech Support. I modified the email slightly to remove personal account information.

MSN Messenger Technical Support referred you to us.

My name is Catherine and I understand you deleted the confirmation e-mail messages for your account. I know how important it is for you to have your account verified.

To help confirm your account, please write back using the concerned Microsoft Passport Network account, youraddr@yourisp.com. Please make sure to include the Service Request number 10C03AD3473 and the following sentence in your message: “I need to confirm this e-mail address: youraddr@yourisp.com”.

With regard to the other accounts that are needed to be verified, please let us know the complete e-mail address.

We look forward to providing you with consistent service. Your continuous support and feedback motivates us to assist you better.

Sincerely,

Catherine
Microsoft Passport Network Technical Support

I’m not sure if emailing them an email as instructed above would work without a prior Service Request number, but it’s probably worth trying.

Something to add?

I would go to http://support.msn.com/eform.aspx?productKey=passportform&page=support_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts and fill out a support request. They will email you back with instructions. Update us on your success and thank you for your comment.

ATTENTION!!!!
Let me clarify some things:

1. I am not Microsoft. Therefore, I cannot confirm your email address for you. You need to contact Microsoft. You can use the following link to do so: http://support.msn.com/eform.aspx?productKey=passportform&page=support_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts

2. Why are people typing in ALL CAPS? That makes me think you are yelling at me. Take a deep breath and re-read this thread. Just because I occasionally write at 9th grade reading level, you should be able to understand what I am saying (unless you are in 9th grade or below… or a poor reader).

3. To answer your Mrs. Soper’s question regarding where to find your service request number—You must request service from Microsoft in order to receive a service request number.

You can also get some good info about your NET Passport Account at https://accountservices.passport.net

//end sarcasm
