Every so often, I setup somebody with MSN Messenger. But, I occassionally forget to remind them to respond to the email verification email they will receive after signup. So, about half of the people end up deleteing the email since they don’t know who it was from (like the good little skeptics I’ve advised them to be).
I have yet to find the answer to how I can have another verification email sent. I emailed Microsoft today to see if they have an answer for me. The problem, you see, is that you cannot change your display name without having verified your email address; so, your display name is left as your email address. And even Microsoft advises against using your email address as your display name because it poses a security threat to your account. In addition, your display name has “email address not confirmed” annexed to the end. Irritating.
So I ask, what is the answer?
UPDATE 10/12/05
I received the following email this morning from Microsoft Tech Support. I modified the email slightly to remove personal account information.
MSN Messenger Technical Support referred you to us.
My name is Catherine and I understand you deleted the confirmation e-mail messages for your account. I know how important it is for you to have your account verified.
To help confirm your account, please write back using the concerned Microsoft Passport Network account, youraddr@yourisp.com. Please make sure to include the Service Request number 10C03AD3473 and the following sentence in your message: “I need to confirm this e-mail address: youraddr@yourisp.com”.
With regard to the other accounts that are needed to be verified, please let us know the complete e-mail address.
We look forward to providing you with consistent service. Your continuous support and feedback motivates us to assist you better.
Sincerely,
Catherine
Microsoft Passport Network Technical Support
I’m not sure if emailing them an email as instructed above would work without a prior Service Request number, but it’s probably worth trying.
