Who are those funny orange people?

The funny orange people? Oh, you must be talking about the school zone crossing guards sporting their proud, bright orange vest. Sure, I know them—they volunteer to help kids safely cross the street in traffic. One might think that the sight of them is a clear indication of a school zone (along with the signs and walking children), but, this is not the case for everyone.

Yesterday, I approached the school zone I pass every day on my drive home from work. My blood pressure always rises a bit as I anticipate that nearly a third of the drivers will ignore the 100 foot school zone that envelopes the intersection.

And this day was no different, except today, a lady in an SUV was blaring on her horn when the lady in the lane next to me slowed down to 15MPH. Idiot. So, once we were out of the school zone, I pulled up next to the lady, feeling very upset at her stupidity, to tell her that it was a school zone. Once she finally noticed I was looking at her, I mouthed, “SCHOOL ZONE” slowly, so she could understand.

Immediately, she hung her middle finger up so I could clearly see her distaste for whatever it was I had to say. Then, she began screaming repeatedly, “FUDGE YOU!” I think she would have done the same thing if I was mouthing, “YOU HAVE A BOMB STRAPPED TO YOUR TIRE!”

Accepting that my efforts against the dumb people was fruitless, I allowed her to speed ahead to the red light. As she accellerated, I glanced into the back seat of her car and saw 3 children.
